Welding stainless steel tubes requires a high level of skill and attention to the characteristics of this material. The weldability of stainless steel, or its ability to form a strong welded joint, is among the key factors for successful welding. Here are a few aspects to consider when welding stainless steel tubes:

1. Thermal conductivity: The difference in thermal conductivity of stainless steel compared to conventional steels requires process adaptation. The heat concentration and high temperatures in the joint area require adjustment of the current to achieve optimum results.

  • 2. Linear expansion coefficient: Avoid ignoring this setting as it can cause cracks in the weld seam when welding metals of different thicknesses.
  • 3. Thermal mode: It is important to avoid temperatures above 500°C, which can affect the material's corrosion properties. Rapid cooling of the welded area is an effective way to combat this phenomenon.

There are three main methods of welding stainless steel:

  • Welding with coated electrodes (MMA mode): A unique method that, despite the lack of high requirements, produces a high quality weld. Working in reverse polarity and careful use of the electrodes are key to the success of this method.
  • Welding with tungsten electrodes using argon arc technology (DC/AC TIG mode): Use for thin metal and parts with high quality requirements. Please note the specific application and the importance of proper cooling.
  • Argon semi-automatic welding with stainless steel wire (MIG mode): Delivers high weld quality and productivity. The addition of nickel to stainless steel wire improves the strength of the joint.
